D.O. VINOS DE MADRID
The wine appellation was founded in 1990, and their wineries and vineyards are located in 30 municipalities in the Madrid region, in Central Spain.
This is a wine area to discover, still largely unknown and with a lot of potential and possibilities, to call the attention of eventual consumers, and without any doubt, has a lot to offer.
THE WINERY
Vinícola de Arganda is a winery founded in the 1940s. In 2002 the winery moved to their new premises, which allow to bring the necessary modern technology to enable to produce wines adapted to today’s consumer. Temperature controlled fermentation, pneumatic presses, and an aging room, at controlled temperature and humidity, with capacity for 2.000 oak barrels, mostly of American oak mid toasted.
THE VINEYARD
Located in the southeast of the region of Madrid, and the grapes from where the wines originate, come from selected vineyard plots in the area of influence of the Tajo River, in the production subzone of Arganda del Rey. This area is located between 3 rivers, The Jarama, the Tajuña, and the Tajo, the great river that crosses the area, which allows a natural and capillar irrigation of the vineyards.
In the vineyard plots located in Arganda del Rey, different types of places are combined where its 150 hectares of vineyards are cultivated, from the vineyards located in the paramo, with more rigorous climatic conditions and very adequate to the cultivation of Tempranillo, an area of slopes near the streams that cross the municipality of Arganda del Rey, with characteristics more typical for the cultivation of the Malvar grape, with moderate acidity and high sugar content, and the plain area, characterized by many hours of annual sunshine and where the vine has traditionally been cultivated since Roman times.
THE SOILS
The vineyards are more than 30 years old and are on land with sedimentary formations, mainly limestone, predominant in the subzone of Arganda del Rey. The soils have a frank or frank-clay texture. The vineyards are between 600 and 650 meters above sea level, as they are located in the very center of Spain’s central plateau.
THE TYPES OF GRAPE
The grape varieties where our wines come from are Malvar for white wine, which is a rare variety and of very limited production, and Tempranillo for the 3 red wines, which is the red grape variety with a more widespread cultivation in Spain, and with the greatest international reputation.
THE HARVEST
It takes place between the end of August and the month of September.
The D.O. Vinos de Madrid has 4 subzones and the Arganda del Rey area, concentrates 60% of the production of the entire D.O. Vinos de Madrid.
In these vineyards, the harvest is done 70% by mechanical means and 30% manually, where the selection of the best bunches in the vineyard is made.
